Ausbeds Cooper mattress

Cooper

I designed the Cooper for people who want a great mattress without the full investment upfront. Same honeycomb pocket springs, same natural latex, same Tencel cover as every Ausbeds mattress. The only difference is what sits between the latex and the springs.
Are you between 80kgs and 100kgs? This should work for you.

The magic inside the Cooper

Natural latex

Natural latex

Built to outlast foam

5cm of GOLS-certified natural latex (95% organic). Responsive and bouncy, not the slow sinking of memory foam. Sits directly on the pocket springs with a purple foam buffer between them. No microspring layers means less cushioning and a more direct feel.
Honeycomb pocket springs

Honeycomb pocket springs

Matched to your body weight

986 pocket springs (queen) arranged in a honeycomb pattern. That's 28% more than the industry standard 768. This is what the high-end makers do: Hastens, Vispring, Savoir. More springs means more elasticity and better contouring. Each unit is calibrated to your body weight. Without microspring layers above, you feel the pocket springs more directly.
Tencel cover

Tencel cover

Full access to every component

Eucalyptus-based Tencel (not polyester) with 1.5cm of quilted polyfoam. It stretches so it doesn’t fight the springs and latex underneath. Fully zippered so you can access, adjust, or replace any component yourself. Want more cushioning later? Add a microspring layer to move to Aurora or Cloud.
From Karl van Lieshout, Founder

Who the Cooper is for

The Cooper is for people who like sleeping on a mattress, not sinking into one. No microspring layers means you feel the support more directly. Some people really prefer that.

It's also the smart pick if you're buying for a teenager's first real bed, a guest room, or a first apartment. Same core build as the Cloud. The only difference is what sits between the latex and the pocket springs.

If you're 80–100kg, start at Level 9. Over 100kg, Level 12. Under 80kg, Level 8. That's the Cooper's softest setting. We match the spring tension to your body weight, not some vague 'medium firm' label. If you want something softer than Level 8, you need microspring layers. That's the Aurora or the Cloud.

And if you change your mind later, we can add microspring layers for $500 each. We come to you, swap the foam for microsprings in your bedroom. Takes about ten minutes. That's why I say the Cooper isn't the cheap option. It's the starting point.

"We have started with a medium Cooper for the guest room and it's been great being able to adjust the feel to find what works for each of us."

Built to upgrade

The upgrade path

Every Ausbeds mattress is modular. Unzip the cover, and you can access every layer individually. The Cooper has three layers inside: natural latex on top, purple foam in the middle, and pocket springs at the bottom.

The purple foam is a high-density polyurethane buffer. It's CertiPUR-US certified, durable, and holds the space where microspring layers would sit in the Aurora or Cloud. Want to upgrade? We remove the foam and replace it with a microspring layer. Your Cooper becomes an Aurora. Want to go further? Add a second microspring layer. Now it's a Cloud.

Each microspring layer costs $500. We do the swap in your bedroom in about 10 minutes. You keep the same cover, the same springs, the same latex. Nothing goes to waste.

This is why I say the Cooper is the smartest entry point. You're not locked in. You're not throwing away a mattress if your needs change. You're just adding to what's already there.

"I received a call from Karl at Ausbeds who advised they could replace the springs to make the mattress firmer. The following day the spring set was delivered and replaced. The mattress is now perfect for me."

Being honest

Who it's not for

If you're a strict side sleeper and you really want that deep pressure relief where your shoulder and hip sink right in, you may prefer microspring layers. The Aurora has one layer, the Cloud has two.

If you're a particularly hot sleeper and airflow is your top priority, the Aurora might suit you better. Microspring layers allow more air to circulate than foam does. The Cooper's purple foam buffer is fine for most people — but if you run hot, the extra airflow from microsprings makes a noticeable difference.

The Cooper's firmness range is 8–16. If you want something softer than Level 8, you need microspring layers. The Aurora starts at Level 5, the Cloud at Level 2.
